Following the King’s Speech, Dr Hudson stood up in the House of Commons to welcome the Government’s exciting legislative agenda for the upcoming Parliament.
From tougher sentencing so criminals feel the full weight of the law to protecting our children from the scourge of vaping – Dr Hudson cited a number of Bills being introduced to Parliament that will leave the country safer, fairer and more prosperous than before.
Dr Hudson specifically mentioned new legislation including:
- Sentencing Bill:
- Ensures those committing the most heinous crimes are locked up for longer to protect the public whilst steering redeemable offenders off the cycle of reoffending.
- Criminal Justice Bill:
- Supports the Government’s zero-tolerance approach to crime cracking down on anti-social behaviour and tackling violence against women and girls.
- Holocaust Memorial Bill
- Reaffirming the UK’s deep commitment to the importance of commemorating the Holocaust.
- Renters (Reform) bill
- Strikes a fairer balance in the relationship between renter and landlord with both parties receiving more rights. Bans no-fault evictions and helps tenants own pets while also making it easier for difficult tenants to be evicted.
- Tobacco and Vapes Bill
- Boosting the nation’s health and easing the burden on the NHS by making sure our children are never allowed to develop smoking addictions. Also cracking down on vaping products being targeted at under-18s.
- Football Governance Bill
- Establishes a regulator for the top tiers of English football and promotes fan engagement building on the Fan-Led Review of Football Governance led by Tracey Crouch MP.
- Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill
- Taking urgent action to stop livestock being exported for fattening or slaughter.
Speaking afterwards, Dr Hudson said:
“It was an incredible privilege to welcome our Conservative Government’s exciting legislative agenda delivering on the long-term priorities of the British public.
“On a personal level, it has been incredibly rewarding to see issues such as cracking down on youth vaping and improving animal welfare that I have championed, included in the King’s Speech. I very much look forward to supporting this critical legislation as it progresses through Parliament.”
Selected quotations from Dr Hudson’s speech:
- “It is an honour to speak in this debate on the first King’s Speech of His Majesty’s reign. I pay tribute to him for his unstinting service to our country and the Commonwealth, carrying on the truly humbling legacy of his mother, Her Majesty our late Queen.”
- “It is important that those who commit crime must feel the full force of the law and serve the penalty for the crime they have committed. I very much welcome the Government’s clear commitment to that in the King’s Speech. The Sentencing Bill will introduce steps to ensure tougher sentences for criminals and increase the confidence of victims.”
- “The Government have delivered an extra 20,000 police officers nationally, and I welcome that. In Cumbria, we have seen a more visible police presence on our streets and more police stations opening up. As a local illustration, since PC Stewart Green started as the community beat officer in Penrith in July, there has been a 15.7% reduction in antisocial behaviour compared with in the same period last year.”
- “I would like to give my wholehearted support to the Government’s timely commitment to the Holocaust Memorial Bill. In a deeply troubling time for the Jewish community, it is only right that we make sure the Holocaust is never forgotten.”
- “I am proud that the Government have a strong record of action on animal welfare in this Parliament. In the King’s Speech, their commitment to banning live exports for fattening and slaughter is a clear sign that they support our high animal welfare standards.”
- “The tobacco and vapes Bill has my full support and is a landmark step to eradicate the threat of vaping for our under-18s. I hope that the Bill will be wide-ranging and that we truly get a grip on a potential ticking time bomb for public health.”
