- Cumbria is one of 25 areas selected to trial cutting-edge flood forecasting and natural flood management schemes
Pioneering flooding and coastal resilience projects led by local authorities and delivered over the next six years, will receive a share of £150 million from the Government as part of the new Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme.
Cumbria is one of the areas that has been selected, with a project that aims to test a range of solutions to improve resilience to flooding, including working with farmers and landowners to deliver natural flood management projects such as leaky dams, tree planting and flood storage to slow the flow and store floodwaters in a range of locations.
Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, said:
“It is fantastic news that Cumbria has been selected to receive a share of this funding. Seasonal flooding and severe weather events makes the County acutely vulnerable. I have raised the issue of the negative effect that flooding has on mental health with the Prime Minister and it is encouraging to see funding put in place to prevent floods from ravaging communities in the first instance.
“With the effects of climate change already being felt it is vital that we prepare our communities for flooding.
“Working with farmers and landowners across Cumbria to deliver natural flood management projects will help deliver solutions to improve resilience, tailored to the needs of our local area”.
