Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, has welcomed the success of UK Parliament Week as he participated in three sessions with youth organisations across his constituency.
UK Parliament Week is an annual festival that engages people from across the UK with their UK Parliament, explores what it means to them and empowers them to get involved. It provides a platform for people to learn more about their democracy, how laws are made and who makes them.
The week, which is held in November, runs several activities such as:
- Q&A sessions, quizzes and lively debates
- creating petitions and campaigning for change
- making videos and posting online
- debating issues and holding votes
- themed assemblies and school council elections
- baking, crafting and colouring
- virtual talks from MPs, Members of the House of Lords, local councillors or mayors, MSs, MLAs and MSPs
Commenting Dr Neil Hudson MP said:
“I was delighted to take part in a number of events this November, with groups in my constituency, to mark UK Parliament week. It is an immensely privileged part of my job to meet and be quizzed by fantastic youngsters. Over the last week or so I have had the pleasure of attending Q&A sessions with the 1st Skelton Brownies, 1st Appleby-in-Westmorland Scout Troop and the 1st Hayton Guides. I would like to thank all those who took part in the brilliant meetings across all three groups and I can honestly say that the uniformed youth organisations in Penrith and The Border are in very good heart!
Learning about how Parliament works and having access to those who represent you is a vital cornerstone of any well-functioning democracy. UK Parliament Week was different this year due to coronavirus restrictions but this didn’t dampen the quality of the experience. I was glad to take part in the Q&A sessions and with the quality of some of the questioning perhaps a future in politics beckons for some of those who took part!”
