Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Epping Forest, has expressed his profound disappointment and anger following the Labour Government’s announcement of significant delays to the redevelopment of Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow.
Ahead of the 2024 UK General Election, the Labour Party repeatedly emphasised its commitment to delivering the New Hospitals Programme, including rebuilding Whipps Cross and Princess Alexandra Hospitals. However, both Whipps Cross and Princess Alexandra Hospitals have now been moved into ‘Wave 2’ with construction expected to start between 2032 and 2034.
Whipps Cross Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital serve a vital lifeline for those in Epping Forest and beyond, however they have faced significant challenges due to outdated infrastructure and increased demand for service.
Following the Labour Government’s announcement, Dr Hudson took swift action and met with the Minister for Secondary Care, Karin Smyth MP, to voice his concerns and call on the Government to expedite these re-developments.
Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Epping Forest, said:
“Both Princess Alexandra Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital serve many of my constituents and I am incredibly disappointed and angry that the Labour Government have chosen to delay the much-needed redevelopments until 2032. I and my constituents of Epping Forest and people wider in London and Essex are furious about these delays and more broken promises by Labour.
“When in opposition, then Shadow Health Secretary, Wes Streeting MP, was an ardent supporter of the ‘Whipps Won’t Wait’ Campaign. Under Labour, it seems very much that ‘Whipps will wait’.
“These delays are unacceptable. This is particularly frustrating as we Conservatives got diggers in the ground at Whipps Cross, with construction well underway for the new car park and planning permission approved.
“I am calling on the Government and the Secretary of State to urgently reconsider its priorities and bring forward construction timelines for both Whipps Cross and Princess Alexandra Hospital."
