Dr Neil Hudson MP for Penrith and The Border has welcomed the measures announced by the Chancellor on Wednesday 8th July as part of his Summer Economic Update, offering a much-needed boost for tourism and hospitality businesses in Penrith and The Border.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday 9th July, Dr Hudson thanked businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector for their tireless efforts to ensure they can reopen safely and in accordance with Covid-secure guidelines.
Acknowledging that the tourism and hospitality sector has been severely impacted by this crisis, Dr Hudson urged the Government to keep these sectors, which may be slower to recover, under review, with additional Government support provided if necessary to help them through to the next full season.
Dr Hudson’s request for ongoing review comes following the local MP’s visit to a number of businesses re-opening across the constituency last week.
Neil said, “ I was delighted to see first-hand the great work that local businesses had done as they re-opened in recent days. From Lanercost Tearoom, to Askham Hall, to Ullswater Steamers, to Granny Dowbekin’s Tearoom in Pooley Bridge and to the Lodges at Artlegarth, folk had gone the extra mile to reassure their customers that they were ready, safe and welcoming people to come to enjoy their businesses. With the Government measures and confidence of the public to enjoy these businesses, we can by working together give a real boost to our local economy as we move away from lockdown.”
In response to Dr Hudson’s contribution in the Chamber, the Minister for Sport, Tourism and Heritage, Nigel Huddleston MP, agreed to continue to monitor the situation and engage closely with business as they take their first steps towards reopening. The Minister also highlighted the MP for Penrith and The Border for working closely with Cumbria Tourism.
