From Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announcing a major new package of international climate support to his pledge to make the UK a clean energy superpower, Dr Neil Hudson has praised our Conservative Government on its monumental commitments to tackling climate change.
Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border’s, comments came following a meeting of world leaders in Egypt for the UN’s Climate Change Conference, known as COP 27, to take action on the world’s collective climate goals. At the start of the event, the UK handed over the COP Presidency to Egypt, hoping to galvanise action on the pioneering climate commitments made at COP 26 in Glasgow last year.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak committed the UK to a raft of green investments including £65.5 million for green technology innovation; £150 million for a new Forests and Climate Leaders’ Partnership to protect rainforests from the Congo Basin to the Amazon; and £65 million for the Nature, People and Climate Investment Fund.
Attending the event last year on Nature Day, Dr Hudson stressed the importance of the conference for his constituents and indeed all of humanity. Since then, he has pushed for resolute action to combat climate change by speaking up in the House of Commons on a range of climate-related issues, engaging with local environmental groups and working with colleagues on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee on issues such as illegal and immoral sewage discharges, farming with nature and reducing plastic waste.
Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, said:
“The UK has once again proved itself to be a world leader in the green revolution and I must thank the Prime Minister for making sure green targets remain a core focus for Government as he engaged with the global community on a range of climate issues in Egypt.
“It was an honour to attend COP 26 in Glasgow last year and so for our Conservative Government to has stuck to its historic commitments and provided leadership to the world which is truly inspiring.”
Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, said:
“Fighting climate change is not just a moral good – is it fundamental to our future prosperity and security. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and contemptible manipulation of energy prices has only reinforced the importance of ending our dependence on fossil fuels.
“We need to move further and faster to transition to renewable energy, and I will ensure the UK is at the forefront of this global movement as a clean energy superpower.”
