"Beating Coronavirus will take months not weeks and this is why as we ease restrictions everyone must stay alert and follow the rules – because if not, the Government will have no choice but to impose lockdown again and we will be back at square one. So as we begin to recover and return to our way of life, it is vital that we all stay alert, so we can control the virus and save lives.
"I know there is much anxiety as to what the lifting of the restrictions will mean for our communities here in Cumbria. I urge people locally and visitors to use their common sense and strictly observe the social distancing guidance. It is important to remember that the lifting of restrictions for travel to exercise should be treated sensibly and that any visitors to Cumbria remember that you are not allowed to travel to stay over.
"Cumbria will be open for the tourist business in the future, but not yet, so please try and remain close to home. Rest assured that I will be keeping in regular contact with the Police, NHS and Local Resilience Fora, to monitor the situation and raise any concerns within Government to ensure that measures are appropriate to the needs of our local community."
Stay Alert
We can all help control the virus if we all stay alert. This means you must:
• Stay at home as much as possible
• Work from home if you can
• Limit contact with other people
• Keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)
• Wash your hands regularly
• Self-isolate if you or anyone in your household has symptoms.
