Dr Neil Hudson MP welcomed two groups of Year 9 pupils from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith, to the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, taking part in wide-ranging question and answer sessions.
Travelling almost 300 miles to the nation’s capital, the QEGS students enjoyed seeing the sights in London as part of the school’s annual Activities Week – where most of the school are off timetable to enjoy trips and events to complement their education.
From riding the London Eye to watching Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre, the children enjoyed getting a flavour of London life during their trip, which included a tour of Westminster Palace.
The two groups of students got to walk the halls of power, while learning about how laws are created in our parliamentary democracy. This culminated with youngsters meeting their local MP, Dr Neil Hudson.
Dr Hudson enjoyed their challenging questions and discussions which included issues such as social media use, mental health, what levelling up means for Cumbria, and rural connectivity.
Speaking afterwards he said: “It was great to meet with these amazing young folk from QEGS and hear their thoughts on the world and the issues that matter to them.
“Their questions were excellent and they are a real credit to their families, the school and all the staff there. The sun was shining and I hope they had a great day learning about the Houses of Parliament – I know I enjoyed their visit considerably.”
“It’s great to see Cumbrian youngsters taking the opportunity to learn about the wider world – ultimately the future is in their hands, so it was lovely to share discussions with them and hopefully impart some helpful tips to them as well.”
Every year, scores of constituents visit Westminster, and Dr Hudson always tries to meet them to discuss his role and the goings-on of Parliament.
