Education and Careers in Land-based sectors inquiry

On Tuesday 16 January, the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee will hold its first evidence session in its inquiry into education and careers in land-based sectors.
MPs will look at career pathways into the land-based sectors, how the sector can attract and retain workers, and what its future workforce might look like.
The Committee launched its inquiry in September to explore the relationship between education and the land-based industries, and the effectiveness of schools and higher education in embedding awareness of the sector.
Next week’s session will ask the witnesses about the skills shortage in the land-based sectors and will hone in on mechanisms for better attracting young people into choosing a career in the sector, and what role the Government and industry organisations can play in promoting the sector.
MPs will also consider the accessibility of the land-based sectors for those seeking a career change later in life, as well as what can be done to facilitate new entrants from non-rural backgrounds, into the industry.

Food security is absolutely critical for our nation, and we must make sure that we train up the next generation of key workers to step up and fulfil this role.”
