An innovative new service aimed at helping businesses thrive has been launched in Cumbria thanks to £13 million in national funding from the Conservative Government.
Dr Neil Hudson welcomed the opening of Cumbria’s Business & Intellectual Property Centre which will provide free advice for business owners, entrepreneurs, or anyone with an idea or invention.
Part of a national network of centres by the British Library, BIPC have opened a centre in Barrow and one in Carlisle, in association with Cumbria County Council’s Library and Archives Service. Anyone can utilise the service’s business advice, database access, intellectual property training, and experts in residence.
Recently, Dr Hudson met with Cumbria’s BIPC team digitally to discuss options for more remote businesses and along with the two new hubs, Cumbria BIPC has launched a new website and social media platforms. The team are also delivering, events, webinars and 1 to 1s to help Cumbrians with their business needs.
Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, said:
“From talking to people this summer it’s so clear to me what a wealth of enterprising and innovative business minds we have. I have no doubt BIPC will unlock this potential with thanks to the Government’s monumental £13 million national investment.
“Here in Cumbria, it’s really heartening to see that the BIPC are committed to providing for people and businesses in rural and remote locations, ensuring everyone has access through online and phone resources.”
The BIPC team has a range of local partners who can provide extra support, advice or guidance in areas such as finance and grant applications to marketing and recruitment. These include Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, Cumbria Chambers of Commerce, Cumbria Business Growth Hub, National Federation of Self Employed and Small Businesses, the Department for Work and Pensions, Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership, the British Library, Carlisle Ambassadors, Furness Education and Skills Partnership, the Job Centre and Business Support Helpline.
Each centre has access to high level data resources such as Ibis World, Mintel, Cobra, Local Data Online and a state-of-the-art Ultimaker 3D printer all free of charge with a library membership.
