Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, showed his support for a popular North Cumbria charity when he was given a tour of Heathlands Cumbria, near Harker.
Heathlands is a community project providing those with disabilities, mental health issues or who have experienced a brain injury the opportunity to take part in a range of daytime activities surrounded by woodland and fields. Life skills, radio editing, maths, drama and catering are just some of the myriad activities on offer to boost the lives of people across Cumbria.
From being able to unwind in the peace and quiet to being supported by expert staff members to make positive life choices, those who benefit from Heathlands are overflowing with praise for the project. The Heathlands project is run by the Laurie Brewis Trust, a charity that works with vulnerable and hard to reach groups in North Cumbria.
Dr Hudson met with Heathlands staff, volunteers and beneficiaries to tour the site before speaking more about his role as an MP and answering questions. During his visit, Dr Hudson also took part in a live online interview session for the service users.
Dr Neil Hudson said:
“Heathlands truly is an amazing place. Hearing from those who take part in some of the daytime activities about the confidence, life skills, and friends they have gained while at the project was really heart-warming. Heathlands is a great resource for our communities.
“Moreover, the hard work and dedication of the Heathlands team is a testament to the wealth of selfless and generous people we have here in Penrith and The Border. I genuinely couldn’t be prouder to represent our wonderful communities. Thanks again to the Heathlands team for showing me all the great work being done. Thanks also to the team for letting me take part in their live interactive online session for service users.”
The visit ties in with Dr Hudson’s work in Parliament pushing for better mental health provision, particularly in rural areas such as those in Penrith and The Border. Recently the Official EFRA Committee Inquiry that he triggered on the topic held its final evidence session, helping to inform the upcoming report that will be submitted to the Government.
